Desktop effects could not be enabled’ error while trying to enable ‘compiz’

Ok, my Nvidia 9500 GT  card   is burned :( ,  i tried to use  the build in 4500 HD intel  GLX card instead ,

The problem was with a previous installation of Nvidia drivers that was removed.
Although I am using the intel driver, the GLX extension from Nvidia was being picked up. This is because the alternatives tool is still linked to nvidia for glx lib.
Fixed it with following commands -

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install –reinstall xserver-xorg-video-intel libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo update-alternatives –remove gl_conf /usr/lib/nvidia-current/ld.so.conf

restart
that is all

NOTE: The following information has been publicly disclosed on a number of Internet sites, and is not a new find. I’m simply repeating it here for the sake of completeness.

  1. Click Restart at the login window
  2. While the computer is restarting, hold down “Command-S” until you see text scrolling through the window. This boots the computer into single user mode.
  3. At the Localhost% prompt type:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    /sbin/SystemStarter

You will then see various services starting up.

  4. When the Localhost% prompt reappears, type:
    passwd root

It will then ask you to type the new root password twice, so do so.

  5. After entering the new password, type:
    reboot

At the login window, enter username root wih the new password. Once you are connected, you can use the Multiple Users application (/Applications/Utilities) to change your normal user’s password, or create a new user account.

NetBIOS Hacking,What is it?

NetBIOS Hacking
is the art of hacking into someone else’s computer through your computer. NetBIOS stands for “Network Basic Input Output System.” It is a way for a LAN or WAN to share folders, files, drives, and printers.
How can this be of use to me?

Most people don’t even know, but when they’re on a LAN or WAN they could possibly have their entire hard drive shared and not even know. So if we can find a way into the network, their computer is at our disposal.
What do I need? (more…)

Recently, Gene over at ERACC WEblog Makes an effort to define the ‘free’ in “Free & Open Source Software”.

His main points boil down to :

This is a fact in that one is not required to fork over hard earned money for any FOSS. But there is some cost associated with FOSS and that is the cost of learning to use it. While this is not a monetary cost, it is a cost if one considers one’s time to be of value. We will call this a time cost.

Pidgin through proxy in Linux

First of all, this also works if you are using Gaim.pidgin
Have you ever been to a place(school, work etc.) where you were unable to use your IM software because of some administrator that blocked it. Well, I have, and I have also found a way around it. I am using Pidgin as my IM program, which supports many different IM protocols.

Here is how you do it:

install tor

Whenever you create a new account in pidgin, go to the “Advanced” tab.

Under “Proxy Options” and “Proxy type”, you choose “SOCKS 5″.

* In the “Host” field type in “127.0.0.1″, and set the “Port” to “9050″.

This should work with most of the IM protocols, although I haven’t tested all of them. The login time will probably also be a while longer than normal, but just be patient

Open your home folder in the file browser, and select View->Show Hidden Files. If you can’t find the .fonts folder, create it.

You can copy any TTF font file into this folder and it will become available immediately to applications after they are restarted. You can get TTF fonts from the Internet, or even a Windows system.

Installing Microsoft Truetype fonts on Ubuntu

vista-fonts

You can install the MS core fonts by installing the msttcorefonts package. To do this, enable the “Universe” component of the repositories. This is done by default in Feisty. After you do that, use the following command from the command line:

$sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
